My twin son’s 8th birthday cake

This year my boys birthday theme was a combination of The Avengers w/Spiderman and Angry Birds.  We dubbed it Angry Avengers lol!!  Anyway I had to find a way to turn these two pictures into a cake….

I decided that I was going to make the characters out of rice crispy treats and cover them in fondant.  I went to work….

I made these a week in advance to give them enough time to set and be dry enough to handle without harming them.

Next I planned their cake.  I decided to do a patriotic red, white and blue cake.  Can’t have a labor day birthday and NOT have a patriotic cake!
Here is the finished cake….
Bottom tier is a chocolate mousse cake covered in red fondant, blue stripes and white stars.
Middle tier is a white almond sour cream (WASC) cake covered in white fondant with red stripes and blue stars.
The top tier is a banana cake covered in blue fondant with white stripes and red stars.
I have to send a shout out to 2 people.  First I’d like to thank the best cake class teacher EVER, Mrs. Phyllis Farrell.  I took all 4 of the Wilton Cake Decorating Courses and she was my instructor for all the classes.  Without this AWESOME lady, I would NOT have been able to create such an AMAZING cake for my boys.  If you have a Facebook page, stop on over to her page www.facebook.com/PhyllissCustomCakes to check out her BEAUTIFUL cakes and don’t forget to “Like” it!
Next up, the person that I got the recipes from also.  Her name is Edna De La Cruz and she is a professional master baker and she does some of the most amazing cakes I have ever laid eyes on.  She has a website www.designmeacake.com and you can find many great recipes and tutorials there.

Coffee Filter Roses

I treated myself to a dozen of these for my front window when I redecorate it.

Wedding Cupcakes

I was hired by two very dear friends of mine to do their wedding cake.  I hosted a tasting yesterday for them and prepared the three flavors they requested as well as a twist or two on the regular ol icings.

First I made them a chocolate cupcake topped with a chocolate, vanilla, maple icing, the second one I made them was a VERY vanilla cupcake pared with a vanilla bean and maple buttercream icing.  The third and now my personal favorite one was an apple pie cupcake.  This was a cinnamon cupcake that was hollowed out and filled with homemade apple pie filling topped with a caramel swiss buttercreme and caramel sauce.

Yes I know some of these cupcakes don't match what was mentioned above but they are the flavors, I just mixed and matched the flavor cupcakes to other icings to give my friends some other flavor options as well as to show them that the icings will work well with different cupcakes.

Isn't that the most beautiful cupcake you have ever seen?

Craft idea…Coffee Filter Roses

Hey there everyone, been a month of Sunday’s since I posted anything…please forgive me but I have been dealing with a bunch of stuff since my last post.

First my son’s celebrated their 7th in September and then almost immediately after that my husband’s health took a turn for the worse and he went down hill quite rapidly and on November 9th at 8:20am he lost his battle with renal cell cancer.  Not much in the way of cakes for me since that time.  I did manage to do a few which I will post pics of a little later but today I wanted to share a really cool and easy craft idea I found on youtube.  It’s a tutorial on how to make roses out of coffee filters and even though it looks very complicated once you get the hang of it…they get easier and easier to make.  Breaking it down it’s folding, cutting and hot gluing to make the flowers.  So let me start by posting the link to the tutorial I found online and I can not take credit for this one.  I will give a shout out to the wonderful woman (I think her name is Emmy) who took the time to make the tutorial for us to allow us to make these beautiful roses….THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR SHARING!!!!!

YOU MAY HAVE TO COPY AND PASTE THIS ADDRESS IN YOUR BROWSER because I can’t figure out how to add a link…my apologies.

Now I made the roses today and it took about 2 hours for my first bouquet.  The first rose took up most of the time for me because I was following the tutorial and I kept stopping and starting as I went along.  Here is the first rose I did….

Once I got the hang of it…it got easier and easier for me and if I can do these, trust me…you can too!!  This is my finished product….

This would make a lovely gift for Mother’s Day.  At only $25.00 a dozen, it’s a gift that is sure to WOW Mom!

Tea anyone??

My niece Katie was in charge of coordinating a Bridal Shower for a friend of hers and we were looking through some cake books and we saw a really pretty teapot cake that we were going to attempt to replicate.

This is a picture of our inspiration cake.....

This is the replicated cake.....

I couldn't do all the tiny tea cups and teapot on the top so I simplified the teapot topper.  Also couldn't find the pearls for around the edges, so I just piped a border.  Like with ALL firsts, a few mistakes and imperfections are visible but next time it will be better.  :-)

If you are interested in a teapot cake for a bridal shower, little girl's birthday party or even a ladies tea time luncheon....give CakeChic a call at 215-284-3948.

Rapunzel Cake

Met a really sweet lady at the pediatric dentist one day and after chatting a while I gave her my card.  One day she called and needed a Rapunzel (from the Disney's Tangled Movie) cake for her daughter's 7th birthday.  She wanted bling also.  I tried my very best to make her daughter's day special...

Happy 7th Birthday Jessica.
I am so glad your party turned out GREAT!!!
Your Mommy is one awesome lady!

Luau Cakes

I had the opportunity to make 3 cupcake pull apart cakes for the boys Summer Camp a few weeks ago.  They were having a Hawaiian Luau Party and everyone enjoyed themselves.  Here are the cakes I did...

I tried like he!! to add a hula dancer and a surfer but unfortunately I burned my hand taking cupcakes out of the oven when I was baking them and my hand gave out on me with the piping bag when I went to decorate the cakes.  Everyone was happy anyway espically the kids!!

Silver Knights...Graduation Cake for Joey!

My niece Katie and I just got done making a cake for her brother's high school graduation.  They waited until summer to have his party because they wanted to have it at a pool hall and this is the cake that Katie designed.  This is absolutely ALL her creativity, I only helped her put it together.  Oh ok, I may have made a few minor suggestions but it was 97% her creativity!  It really is an awesome cake!

Her brother plays guitar, was on the baseball and swim teams, and took a film and film production in high school.

Congrats Joey!!  You deserve it kiddo!!

Cement Mason "Daddy DeNiro" Cake

My niece Katie wanted to make a special cake for her Dad, Joe's, 61st birthday and after looking at a few fondant cake books she came up with an awesome idea for a really fun cake.  I guess you can call it the Cement Mason cake.  His nickname is "Pops" and sometimes they refer to him as "Daddy DeNiro" and here is his cake.....

We both worked on putting him together.  It is a cupcake "pull apart" cake covered in green butter cream grass.  Has a fondant pond with fish, napping kitty, pavement, "happy bday sign, flowers, and everything is surrounded with the fondant stones as well.

Happy Birthday Joe...enjoy your cake!
